The Power of Hope: History of Leadership Triumphs, a conversation with Jon Meacham, will be offered virtually on Tuesday, October 20 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm Central. Two of Tennessee’s favorite sons will unite when Meacham is interviewed by former NBC anchor and Nashville communications strategist John Seigenthaler, Jr. High demand for the popular event, which was originally designed as an educational program for the alumni and members of four Tennessee leadership non-profits, led the organizers of the webinar-styled event to open it to the general public. Tickets are $25 per person.
In response to a need for positive programming for leaders navigating through this challenging year, the executive directors of four of Tennessee’s premier leadership organizations, Leadership Middle Tennessee, Leadership Music, Leadership Nashville and Leadership Tennessee, are collaborating for the first time ever to present this timely and important virtual event. Meacham, one of the foremost authorities on presidential history, has established himself as one of the most prominent national voices on leadership. A Chattanooga native and Nashville resident, Meacham is the Rogers’ Professor of the American Presidency at Vanderbilt University.
“Jon’s national prominence makes him the right voice to share his historical knowledge and commentary in this non-partisan discussion on what we can learn from our past,” noted Cathy Cate, Executive Director of Leadership Tennessee. “Because of his stature, we knew he would be a popular draw for our alumni, but his reach is so great that all the organizations have been receiving requests to open the event widely.”
A contributor to TIME and the New York Times Book Review, Meacham is a highly sought-after commentator. Known as a skilled orator, Meacham brings historical context to the issues and events impacting people’s daily lives. The author of the New York Times No. 1 bestseller The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, his recently released biography, His Truth Is Marching On: John Lewis and the Power of Hope, debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.
His presidential biographies include those on Thomas Jefferson and George Herbert Walker Bush, and his biography of Andrew Jackson, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2009. He eulogized both First Lady Barbara Bush and President George H.W. Bush.
Seigenthaler is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent for NBC News. He anchored NBC Nightly News Weekend Edition for more than a decade. His reports appeared on The TODAY Show, Dateline, Meet the Press, MSNBC and CNBC. After spending more than 25 years in the New York area, Seigenthaler (Leadership Nashville Class of ‘94 -'95) moved back to Nashville, where he is a Partner with DVL Seigenthaler - FINN Partners, a global public relations and marketing firm.
